poem: why read?

Updated: Dec 2, 2019

by ELLA FRIEDMAN (2018)

why read?

it’s just paper and ink.

the places in the book

don't exist.

why read?

it is so much easier

to sit and watch

a tv screen

for hours on end.

why read?

the people in the book

they aren't real.

they are just

works of fiction.

why read?

reading is

my refuge

my escape.

reading makes me

laugh

cry

think

change.

reading transports me

to a world so extraordinary

so magical

so unique

that a simple tv screen

couldn't even begin

to capture its beauty.

why read?

why not?
